The results of a study on the preparation and holding of an exhibition of rural works in Nizhny Novgorod in 1849 are presented. It is established that the initiator of the exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod was the manager of the Nizhny Novgorod Chamber of State Property V.E. Krukovsky. The leading role in the organization and holding of the exhibition was established by P.I. Melnikov (also known as the writer Andrei Pechersky). A comparison was made with similar exhibitions in other provinces held in the 1840s. Based on the research materials, it was concluded that the exhibition of rural works in Nizhny Novgorod was actually the first exhibition of handicrafts.
