Abstract
Currently, the topic of studying religious ideas and the history of religions has been updated. The compulsory discipline History of Religions of Russia is being introduced into the curricula of Russian higher educational institutions. One of the religious and legal aspects that require study and modern interpretation is the concept of tolerance. The article analyzes the works of European thinkers who first raised the topic of religious tolerance by Thomas More and Jean Bodin, and quotes the most striking statements of thinkers on this issue. The authors draw attention to the fact that the modern view of the content of the concept of tolerance has significantly expanded and transformed from tolerance towards mutual respect for various religious views.
