The article is devoted to the description of the heuristic potential of a point as one of the geometric figures that represents itself as the basis for the comprehension of abstract concepts in the field of science. Based on the material of engineering German texts by means of the method of metaphorical modeling, which involves analysis and synthesis, contextual, definitional and component analysis, as well as the method of oppositions, in the article are identified target areas that are structured by a person with the help of understanding a point as a certain place in the virtual spaces of time, quantity, human intellect; the cognitive significance of the point in their segmentation is considered. The study showed the regular realization in the German language of the metaphorical model "point - position in virtual space", based on the ordinary visual experience of human interaction with the world around him.
