Abstract
Literary characters of male and female genders created by Gogol in the first story of his cycle «Mirgorod» are analyzed. It is revealed that the relations of the main characters are based on the desire of the woman to subdue the man and to turn him into something like a humble child. She achieves this by substituting Afanasiy Ivanivich's memories about the youth - the main source of his love for freedom - by the ones about his dead wife. Having reached the aim at such a dreadful cost, Pulkheriya Ivanovna becomes a symbolistic picture of death and destruction.
