| The author considers the problem of play on words and some mechanisms of its creation. An attempt is made to clarify the terms with respect to different manifestations of this phenomenon. Techniques for creating the play on words are divided into high-level and low-level ones. A special attention is paid to the phenomenon of paronymy and its role in generating high-level play on words. The research material consists primarily of the examples taken from the English language, but some examples from the Russian language are also given for the sake of illustration. |
