Abstract
The results of the occurrence analysis of the naming units in field-crop farming in the Nizhni Novgorod region are presented: 1) two large areas have been identified (on the right bank and on the left bank of the Volga river) along with six smaller zones (around Gorodets, across the Volga, along the Vetluga river, across the Vetluga river, along the Oka river, along the Pyana river) where peculiar subsystems of field-crop farming vocabulary have been formed; 2) the reasons have been established for the emergence of dialect groups in the territory of the region; 3) specific links between each of the above-mentioned zones with neighboring dialect zones of the Russian language have been established. The picture of territorial distribution of field-crop farming vocabulary of Russian dialects in the Nizhni Novgorod region and of its correlation with the vocabulary of other dialects in the country reflects the history of the Slavs who settled along the Volga in the territory previously inhabited by Finno-Ugric tribes.
