The activity of civil society institutions in the Russian segment of the Internet space is investigated. The main features of the activity in the network of Russian non-profit organizations, as well as new constituents of civil society - the network communities - are analyzed. The use of Internet technology by these structures in order to increase the effectiveness of civil activity is considered. It is concluded that the Internet has a considerable modernization potential for the institutions of civil society in Russia.
