The article contains an analysis and a systematization of theoretical approaches to sociological study of the causes of violence at school that are most extensively covered in scholarly literature. The author makes an attempt to operationalize the notions of violence and aggression and the basic sociological conceptions to use them in an applied study of the phenomenon of violence in contemporary Russian school. Although violence is a field of study which is common for all branches of sociology, Russian sociologists still do not pay much attention to this phenomenon. Russian sociology also makes an excessive accent on the origin and the causes of spreading of deviant behavior at school, whereas the victims of violence remain outside the bounds of scholarly attention.
