The article deals with the system of characters' names in one of N.S. Leskov's early stories in the context of realization of the principle of spiritual energy – communication of the God and the person within the Orthodox tradition, first of all in its hagiographical context, through the name of a saint after whom the person was named. The spiritual energy of the name is amplified by its relations and interference with other names. It is in these relations that the true sense of the story is revealed.
