Abstract
The aim of this work is to study some processes of mid-1950s in the Middle East caused by the creation of pro-Western defensive alliance, which became known as the Baghdad Pact. We explore the impact of the actions of two opposing groups: supporters of the Pact, led by Great Britain, and its opponents, led by Egypt, on internal situation in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Protest movements in Jordan in late 1955 - early 1956 are analyzed, as well as their consequences for Jordanian-British relations. The study provides a glimpse of the Jordanian leadership's actions in the context of collision between strategic interests of the West in the Middle East and those of Egypt, a leading regional player during that period. The author concludes that the factor of sensitivity of internal political situation in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the external influence is decisive for the Jordanian ruling class in determining its foreign policy, in which the preservation of an allied partnership with the West, including Britain, plays a significant role.
