| The present article examines social and cultural characteristics of lower middle class representatives (townspeople) in Russian provincial towns at the turn of the 20th century. As a result of the analysis, the authors identify certain modernizing potential in Russian "middle class". However, the prevailing traditional moral norms and economic relations have prevented it from playing a stabilizing role during social upheavals at the beginning of the 20th century. |
