The aim of the article is to study one of the factors that contributed to the shaping of the image of Soviet power in the mass consciousness of the rural population of the Nizhny Novgorod province in the period from late 1921 to early 1926. The source base for this research included record-keeping documents (both published and unpublished ones). A number of new sources have been introduced into scholarly circulation, namely, historical data containing the minutes of the meetings of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID, UGRO), County Committee (UKOM), township Committee (VOLKOM), the GPU summary sheets, forms and complaints, witness statements and trial transcripts, and materials of the investigative bodies and the Prosecutor's office.
