The article summarizes some results of the work aimed at determining some trends in the editorial policy of the «Russkoe Obozrenie» journal (1890-1903). This research involved the use of the database of the journal content, which helped to solve many research and educational problems. In order to take into account the publications continuing from issue to issue of the journal, we introduced the distinction between the concepts of an element and a material, as well as the distinction between the concepts of a genre, a rubric and a material theme. We also discuss a number of methodological issues related to the attribution of anonymous and pseudonymous articles and the features of pagination, etc. The significance of these calculations for the author’s main conclusions on the editorial policy of the «Russkoe Obozrenie» in different years is demonstrated. Some examples are given of calculations regarding the share of various topics in the journal under different editors-in-chief, as well as the authors of various categories, the geographical coverage of articles and so on.
