Nowadays, there are numerous experimental evidences of the essential influence of the flow instability (periodicity) through the mutually moving blade rows of an axial turbomachine on gas-dynamic losses. Despite the urgency of the problem, sources of such losses are not practically investigated. In the given work the analysis is based on use of the equation of energy transfer in a flow, containing unsteady (periodic) vortical wakes behind the blades of mutually moving rows. A source of kinetic energy losses is dissipation of the above mentioned vortical wakes, which are assumed turbulent. The results of experimentally determining the dissipation function in the flow over the stage of the axial compressor are presented.
