Аннотация

Рассматривается история Каллевы атребатов, одного из важнейших городских центров юго-востока римской Британии. По нашему мнению, в развитии города (равно как и урбанизации всего региона) основную роль сыграли несколько факторов. Первый из них - географический. Каллева находилась на пересечении торговых путей, соединявших запад, восток и юг провинции. Важным фактором стало также влияние местных традиций, сформировавшихся в доримский период: они не исчезли, но продолжили своё существование, определив специфику жизни города. Наконец, определённую роль сыграла деятельность Тиберия Клавдия Тогидубна, последнего правителя Южного царства, чья ориентация на Рим была примером для подданных. Выбрав Каллеву в качестве основного города своих владений, Тогидубн во многом предопределил её дальнейшее развитие.
