The article presents an analysis of foreign interspersions of French origin and their specific features in Russian media texts. The study is based on the material of Russian press published from 2008 to 2016. The author identifies several lexical-semantic groups of Gallicisms and determines extralinguistic and proper linguistic causes of their use in the text. Various functions of French interspersions in media speech are examined, such as terminological, nominative, cultural, expressive, citing foreign-language sources, language play. Special attention is paid to the competition between English and French interspersions for their right to take place in the Russian language system. The author presents the conclusion regarding the status of Gallic interspersions in the language and speech and makes an attempt to divide interspersions in Russian media texts into regular and occasional.
