Short stories (tales) from L. Tieck’s cycle «Phantasus» are examined in the article. The readers’ attention is focused on garden space as one of the codes of the German mentality. It is proved that L. Tieck imparts it with certain values and properties by relying on mythological, religious and historical consciousness. The garden in L.Tieck's tales is considered as a stylistic system which is expressed through flower symbolism, the garden/wood opposition, and the specific philosophical concept of «Sehnsucht». The garden in L.Tieсk's tales becomes a portal between the real and fantastic worlds. The rose symbol has a special importance in the flower symbolism of the «Phantasus». It is argued that the garden in the cycle «Phantasus» is an example of national self-identification.
