In this article, we substantiate the need for improving the criminal legislation concerning the term of limitation for criminal proceedings. It is argued that the needs of law enforcement practices dictate the necessity of suspending the limitation period of bringing to criminal liability for the period of investigation; providing a legal framework for the possibility to interrupt the limitation period in the case of a new crime; changes in the criterion for dividing the limitation period and differentiation of this period depending on the consequences of and the method for committing a crime; establishing a limitation period of 20 years for offenses on a large or a very large scale, as well as for those causing grave consequences, and a limitation period of 10 years in other cases.
