The aim of the article is to give the rationale for the study of different mythological systems in their social and historical determinations. The research fields of professional historical studies on mythology as well as the practical applications of the University course on comparative mythology for history students are highlighted through an integrated, typological analysis of different approaches towards mythology. The inner logic of course design is exposed, the main emphasis being made on the problem of the mythologizing of history and «the historicizing of myth», which allows students to apply their command of the history of the ancient world, the middle ages and the history of Russia to their modern studies. The course on comparative mythology for students of historical and pedagogical specialties enables them to develop an integrated view of myth and mythology as some of the oldest cultural and historical phenomena and as an area of human creative activities. It also helps to develop the critical thinking skills in the analysis of mythological materials.
