Abstract
In this article, we examine the epigram, an «eternal» genre of Ancient and European literature. The aim of the study was to identify the antiquity-related intentions in V.A. Zhukovsky’s epigrammatic works, mostly in his translations. Particular attention is paid to translations, which use Latin texts as their source. As a result of comparative analysis, the author comes to the following conclusions. In terms of composition, epigrams are divided into two parts (the fact and the conclusion), which corresponds to the ancient tradition. The texts have the form of a monologue or a dialogue and resemble everyday scenes focusing on a variety of subjects. Zhukovsky adheres to ancient themes to ridicule various vices.
