This article presents the results of our research of the personality of a recidivist on probation who is controlled by the penitentiary inspectorate. The study was performed by means of a questionnaire survey taking into account the classical criminological model (social and demographic, criminal, penal and psychological features). An analysis of Russian literature on the conceptual research apparatus was carried out, and based on this analysis the author's version of the definition «the personality of a recidivist on probation» was formulated. Following the analysis of the data obtained as a result of the research, some negative patterns in the behavior of this category of convicted persons were formulated. Recommendations are proposed for optimizing the work of penitentiary inspectorate officers, taking into account the patterns revealed.
