The article examines the criteria for participation in criminal proceedings and admission to forensic practice. Such criteria include the competence of a forensic expert confirmed by an appropriate certification procedure, including the necessary training, a qualifying examination and checking his readiness for practical work. It is proposed that certification centers for forensic experts should be organized at higher or additional professional education institutions. Such centers must be accredited in the prescribed manner for conducting educational programs in the field of forensics. We also propose to maintain a state register of forensic experts where the experts will be listed in accordance with the certification results.
