The article analyzes the principles of organization of the plot and composition and the system of characters in E. Chizhov's novel «The Interlinear Translation». It proves the duality of the basis of the novel’s plot: the first plot plan is formed by events in the hero's life, while the second plan is centered on translation as a creative process. We establish the connection between the stages of the protagonist-translator’s getting closer to the original and understanding the deeper meaning of the text being translated with the main events in his life. The author of the article makes the following conclusions: E. Chizhov's novel shows translation as a complex creative process; for the translation to be adequate to the original, the translator has to transform into his character, understand the culture of his people, delve into the history of his native country; he should perceive internal, hidden conflicts that are not obvious to a person from the outside rather than reflect the external forms of the country’s life.
