The aim of the article is to examine the principal stages of formation of the archetypic double-world model in the history of Russian literature and to analyze the significance and forms of realization of this archetype in N.V. Kolyada’s works. In the course of the research, the author used dialectic, archetypic, comparative-historical, and receptive methods. Among the main domestic double-world concepts, the author places the romantic, Gogol’s, the symbolist and the postmodernistic models. These concepts that form an indivisible literary tradition are extended and developed in the works by N.V. Kolyada: the playwright creates two symmetric cosmological oppositions (the ordinary world - the destructive reality, the ordinary world - the harmonic reality), in each of them the antinomic worlds are connected by means of semantically diverse symbolical structures.
