The paper presents a linguistic analysis of the character of Emperor Alexander I in R.M. Zotov’s historical prose. In accordance with the concept of describing a person’s character developed in Kirov linguists’ papers, the Emperor’s character is represented as a combination of processual and non-processual characteristics. The method of semantic fields used in the analysis of lexical units allows us to more fully characterize the historical personality. Based on the materials of the study, conclusions are drawn about how exactly Zotov creates the character of the Emperor. The analysis of the novel’s texts shows that the author endows Emperor Alexander I with exceptionally positive features and also points to a positive evaluation of his activities by others. The article also notes some general tendencies in Zotov's description of the characters of the historical type named «The Rulers».
