The paper is focused on the description of the semantic types of pleonasm in the Russian language of the 21st century and the evaluation of their contextual stylistic function. The analysis and classification of 1500 units make it possible to identify the nuclear and peripheral types of pleonastic elements, whose semantic redundancy is determined by both the internal and external factors. Moreover, the authors define the following types of semantic relations between the components of the pleonastic expressions: complete or partial synonymy, embedded meaning of one element into the meaning of another, total redundancy of particular elements of an utterance. The interrelation between the semantic and stylistic functions of pleonasms is represented in the Redundancy Scale, which makes it easier to classify pleonasms as normative or non-normative.
