In recent years, the genre originality of Lermontov's poetry has been a permanent research interest. However, so far there have been no specific studies focusing on the reflection of didactic poetry tradition in his poems. The article by means of comparative-historical and comparative-typological research methods attempts to describe some aspects of the development of the didactic message and vision genres in Lermontov`s works. The object of the study are the verses «Cute Child’s Birthday…», «Night I», «Night II», «The Dream». We prove the presence of some features of the didactic message genre (edifying wish) and the vision genre (the image of the visionary, the situation of vision, spiritual revelation) in these verses. In the poem «The Dream», genre canons are implemented in a special way as they are combined with the love theme. Such combination of the forms that are illustrative of the vision with a theme unusual for this genre reflects Lermontov`s desire to fill the traditional genre forms with new content in search of prospects for their further development.
