This article is based on Mademoiselle de Montpensier’s «Memoirs» (published in 1717) which is considered one of the best examples of French memoir prose of the 17th century and which has not yet been translated into the Russian language. In this study, we analyze the author’s attitude to Louis XIV as a way to translate the author’s intentions. Status attributes, political differences, family ties and personal resentments reflected in the memoirs are the important factors which determine the originality of the author’s attitude. The portrait of the king created by Mademoiselle de Montpensier enables her readers to form an idea about the qualities intrinsic to the representatives of the French Bourbons dynasty. At the same time, the attitude to Louis XIV shows the author's intentions connected with the process of memoir creation and forming the image of the protagonist.
