Abstract
The speech behavior of the characters of P.D. Boborykin's novel «Evening Sacrifice» is characterized by the use of elements of two language systems - Russian and French. The aim of our study is to determine the reasons for the switching of the language code and to analyze the functioning of the elements of the French non-transliterated speech in the characters' dialogues and monologues. In our work, we used classification methods, content analysis and the historical-functional approach. As a result of the research, we came to the conclusion that the speech behavior of the novel's characters is one of the tools for implementing the author's multidimensional creative concept. Russian-French bilingualism allows the author to recreate the image of the era, serves as a means for characterizing his heroes, and enhances the text's expressive properties (which is also achieved by including quotes from French fiction literature). Finally, this bilingualism acts as a symbol of the disease of Russian society, thereby affirming the key thesis of the novel - the idea of «moral insolvency of women» of the St. Petersburg high society of the 19th century.
