The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential, problems and specific features of using the timeline as one of mass media’s effective visualization tools. The author considers visual journalism as a special field of journalistic activity and pays special attention to visual journalism tools. A definition of timeline is given as a tool used in infographics. The methods used in the work include such general scientific research methods as analysis, synthesis, description, observation, comparison, generalization, as well as some special research methods: cultural-historical, structural-typological, structural-functional methods, and content analysis. The article attempts to systematically study the timeline as a "product" of the media sphere reaction to the trend of information visualization. A number of examples are given of using the timeline in Russian online media. The results of the research presented in this article can be used in the practical work of journalists in the field of visual journalism, as well as in the teaching of special courses at journalism departments.
