We examine the title of A. Ivanov's novel «Foul Weather» as an informative symbolic «code». The purpose of the study is to analyze the semantic facets of the image of Foul Weather. The author argues that this image carries a variety of symbolic meanings: the unsettled state of the characters, the unattainability of the dream, the habitual order of life, the state of despair, non-existence; at the same time, it is also a symbol of Russia. These semantic facets of the image of Foul Weather are intertwined with the most important motifs of the novel, they interact with the images of the main characters and contribute to their more profound characterization. This work can be used in teaching literature of the early 21st century.
