The purpose of this article is to reveal the functions of descriptive imagery in Gorky's early stories and to characterize the features of its foreign interpretation in the French translations of the early 20th century. This problem is of special interest due to the fact that the question of the literary method of early Gorky is solved by the compiler of the collection and translator S. Persky in the course of the traditional concept according to which the writer's innovation was associated with the discovery of the «tramp» theme. Therefore, the translator focused on conveying the plot of the stories, without paying due attention to their stylistic peculiarities. Our research shows that the descriptive imagery of the original is changed by the translator who breaks the rhythm of the phrase (by eliminating lexical repetitions, reducing the synonymic series, etc.), which results in significant semantic distortions of Gorky’s text. The philological study of the original text and its French translation was performed using the method of stylistic and comparative analysis.
