Abstract
The paper deals with the poetics and the range of problems tackled in the novel «The life and strange surprising adventures of Robinson Crusoe» by Daniel Defoe. It attempts to analyze the mythology of the novel by describing its artistic forms such as the mythologemes of island, material world, labour and reason. This analysis demonstrates the dynamics of the literary experiment which reconstructs a person’s world view in extreme conditions. The author argues that the artistic form of the novel, which results from the verbal adaptation of the experience gained, is a linking medium between the image and the symbol. This, in turn, leads to the appearance of some mythological patterns borrowed by further literature (loneliness, island, Robinson).
