The article presents an analysis of main trends in the studies of John of Salisbury’s «political philosophy» in western historiography of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. An outstanding English diplomat, thinker and writer, John of Salisbury (1115/1120-1180) was one of the most brilliant representatives of the «Renaissance of the twelfth century» and an author of fundamental treatises - «Policraticus, sive de nugis curialium et vestigiis philosophorum», «Metalogicon», «Entheticus», «Historia pontificalis».
