This article examines the daily life of Soviet people who worked in African countries from 1960 to 1980. The main sources are the memoirs of Soviet diplomats, military advisers, as well as experts in African culture published during the last decade. These memoirs give us a chance to picture everyday life of Soviet people abroad, to understand what difficulties they faced. The peculiarities of Soviet people were more visibly manifested, when they were abroad, and some of these peculiarities earned the respect of African people thus allowing our compatriots to accomplish their missions with honor and dignity. At the same time, their stay outside of “Soviet reality” exposed many flaws and problems of the Soviet system.
