Abstract
The publishing and enlightening activities of the Left Book Club in England are considered since its foundation in 1936 and before the Second World War. It is noted that the Club was established as an educational organization whose main purpose was to spread socialist ideas and confront the fascist threat in the country. However, soon the sphere of the Club's interests significantly expanded, and its leadership, by means of the books published by the Club, sought not only to respond in a timely manner to the pressing problems of the 1930s, where the struggle against fascism remained one of the main tasks, but also to promote general enlightenment of the British population. The author concludes that the successful publishing activity of V. Gollancz contributed to the transformation of the Club into a ramified cultural organization that embraced the widest sections of the British population. The main source for characterizing this activity are the materials collected and published by the Sheffield University library.
