Abstract
The article aims to give an analysis of the concept «province», one of the author's main concepts, which represents the Russian character in Turgenev's cycle «The Sportsman’s Sketches», and to reveal some features of its interpretation in French translations. The materials of the research are the cycle «The Sportsman’s Sketches» by I.S. Turgenev and all French translations of the cycle published in France from 1854 to 1969. The methodology of the research is based on the structural-semantic method and the concept analysis. The method of interpretive theory of translation and the imagological method were used in the work. The analysis of speech composition of the cycle «The Sportsman’s Sketches» has shown that one of the dominating concepts representing the Russian national character is «province». The concept «province» is meaning-forming even though in the work it is presented indirectly. This concept in Turgenev's cycle characterizes the Russian national character not only at the level of images of heroes, but also through assessment of this quality in the national environment and by the author who tells the story as a hunter. Russian national character in «The Sportsman’s Sketches» is reflected in the cultural concept «province». However, in the French translation there is a partial loss of the meanings of the original text's concept, which are revealed by Turgenev indirectly through speech characteristics of his characters and the story-teller.
