The article is focused on one of the debatable language phenomena in modern terminology - the synonymy of special lexical units. The aim of the study is to examine synonymy in the terminology of the methodology of teaching languages. Various types of synonymy of terms and terminological combinations, features of their formal and content structure have been analyzed and described. The conclusion is made about the reasons for the appearance of synonymy in the terminology of the methodology of teaching languages from the time it was born and to the present state.
