«The Terror», a novel by the modern American writer Dan Simmons, is considered in this article within the context of its documentary basis. The aim of the work is to identify the factual component as a structure-forming basis of the novel's artistic reality and to analyze its functions from the perspective of its genre features. Comparative-historical and systemic-structural methods are used in the article. Having analyzed the novel, we come to a conclusion that the writer, being a representative of the postmodernism era, uses history and myths formation as the main ways to display the reality, and also connects the game component, peculiar to this literary direction, with the didactic component. «The Terror» can be called an original variation of a bildungsroman in which the character's coming of age, typical of this genre, occurs along with the reader's education. The original semi-fiction narration technique allows the author to use the document as a way to receive readers' bigger emotional response and to achieve a better understanding of the novel's plan and message.
