The article systematizes and analyzes P.V. Annenkov’s ethical and aesthetic views on biographical genre, expressed in his letters to I.S. Turgenev (all his letters to this recipient are the object of the research). Inherent to the epistolary format, the frankness and freedom of presentation, the effect of feedback and the large number of names and texts mentioned in the correspondence allow us to clarify Annenkov’s vision of the biographical genre, which is of interest both for the study of the creative heritage of both literary figures and for studying the evolution of the biographical genre in Russia.
