The article deals with the possibilities of combining two popular genres of mass literature: the detective fiction and the fantasy. The aim of the work is to reveal which elements of the detective story's structure are borrowed and how they are transformed for the needs of fantasy. The borrowing of detective story elements takes place in two ways: in a magical detective story, the structure of a detective novel is transferred to the entourage of a fantastic narrative (a detective, his assistant, a criminal, some family secret, etc.), while in «urban fantasy» the atmosphere of mystery that is necessary for the narrative - rather than the form - is borrowed from the detective story. It is concluded that fantasy has a great potential for hybridization with other genres of popular literature.
