It is established in this article that metaphors of the text, as well as its vocabulary, are directly dependent on its genre and style and are determined by them. A definition is provided for the genre of poetic essay and linguistic features of the genre are highlighted using some examples from the text in question. Stylistic features, functions and pragmatics of author’s metaphors are also exposed and systematized. It is proved that metaphors are markers of the author's individual style and play the key role in forming I.L. Selvinsky's individual poetic picture of the world.
