The article deals with some important aspects of military cooperation between Russia and Japan within the framework of the development of interstate relations during the post-Soviet period. The factors influencing the content and intensity of contacts between defense departments are analyzed. The authors also assess the interaction in the context of the military-political situation in the northern part of the Pacific region and the development models of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the Japanese self-defense forces. The process of cooperation in the field of defense policy is divided into chronological stages. In the characterization of each stage, paramount importance is placed on the priority of stability in the northern part of the Pacific region.
