The paper presents an analysis of Ivan Turgenev’s attitude to the socialist ideology in 1870s - early 1880s. We reveal the circumstances that formed the writer’s tolerant attitude to the socialist theory, as well as differences in the perception of the images of the socialist future that were created by contemporary European and Russian thinkers. An attempt has been made to explain the «paradox» of the liberal Turgenev, who made a fearless step towards the Russian revolutionary-socialist movement.
