In this article, the concept «university requirement» is proposed as a methodological tool in historical studies of universities. Some nuances and restrictions in the use of the concept «university requirement» are considered. A distinction is made between the categories «university person» and «carrier of a university requirement». The history of development of the university requirement for Nizhny Novgorod is presented. Using the example of the history of the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) State University, manifestations of the university requirement are considered: the first years of the university’s existence, class struggle for the vision of the university, efforts to oppose the closing of the university, L.V. Mankovsky’s and A.A. Andronov's role in preserving the university in the 1930s, the opening of the Faculty of Radiophysics and the Faculty of History and Philology.
