The paper deals with some peculiarities of the volunteer movement in the Nizhny Novgorod region in the era of 1812. The author tries to determine the exact number of volunteers and to analyze the class-corporate features of the epoch that were manifested in the process of volunteers' gathering. Based on the study of the materials of the Central Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the analysis of historiographical works, the exact number of volunteers of different social groups is given. The paper also identifies some specific features of local volunteerism, taking into account other historians' earlier criticism with regard to this issue.
