Abstract
The article presents the results of our research concerning the origins of the reform of the Slovak literary standard (1852) codified by L. ?t?r in the 1840s. There were serious objections to the proposed codification on the part of Catholics and Protestants, whose opinions differed in many aspects. Using the comparative analysis of linguistic works of L. ?t?r and M.M. Hod?a who represented the Protestants, we identified the main differences between their views on the Slovak literary language. So, unlike L. ?t?r, M.M. Hod?a suggested the use of the etymological principle in spelling and brought into line with it some morphological forms. He added new digraphs (i?, i?, i?), phonemes (?, ?), excluded the most controversial elements of the morphological system (syllabic - in past participle was changed to l and in ending of genitive case plural of masculine nouns - to v/w, for example - chlapc?v, rab?w), added new endings (nominative and accusative of neuter adjectives -ie star?i?, endings of cases of adjectives of hard and soft paradigms with ?/? st?l?ho, l??i?c?ho). Some of these changes have been used in the Slovak literary language until now (graphemes ?, ?, diphthongs with i, past participle with -l, ending -ov in genitive of masculine nouns).
