The article considers the peculiarities of the presentation of Chinese national stereotypes in western literature and their interpretation in Pearl Buck’s novels «East Wind, West Wind» and «Pavilion of Women». The novels demythologize negative images of «other», «barbarian» Chinese that were established in the West at the turn of the 20th century. It is emphasized that the uniqueness of the characters, the richness of the cultural background, as well as the universal values with which the heroes of the novels were endowed by the author made China "closer" and had a huge impact on creating a new image of the nation.
