The article reveals the connections of the associative poetics of the early O. Mandelshtam with the era of symbolism. The poet's inverted attitude toward the initial connection of everything that exists is emphasized - the deep eros of things. We define the specific features of Mandelshtam's metaphor, which has a metonymic basis: art becomes a contemplation of the human essence and of the content of one's consciousness, which is intentional and is dissolved in the external image of a person and in external objects. The author makes a conclusion that Mandelshtam's associative poetics moves from post-symbolism to the avant-garde, surreal vision of the world where objects lose their habitual properties.
