The aim of the work is to analyze the use of elements of utopia in the novel «Kruso» by the 21st century German writer Lutz Seiler. The book is suffused with symbols and hints, metaphors and allusions to D. Defoe's robinsonade, to the myths of the Elder Edda and even to the Bible. The author connects the social and political world with the surreal and grotesque world and shows how during the times of the divided Germany the inhabitants of the GDR unconsciously created new utopias-oppositions because of the desire to avoid the totalitarian pressure of a utopically created society. The relevance of the topic is underscored by the need to study the origins of the new German mentality identified in the German-language literature of the 21st century.
